The sun is just beginning to dip behind the distant mountains, casting long, golden streaks of light across the rocky landscape. A young man, perhaps in his early teens, stands alone at the center of a secluded clearing having some old houses. His clothes, simple but functional, are stained with the dirt and ash of his recent practice, but his eyes are sharp with focus.
The air smells faintly of wood smoke, and a slight breeze ruffles his dark hair. His feet are planted firmly on the ground, knees slightly bent, as though he's preparing to channel all his energy into one powerful move. His hands are outstretched in front of him, palms facing each other, and the faintest flicker of heat dances between his fingers.
At first, it's just a small spark—a tiny ember that crackles and pops in the cool air. He grimaces in concentration, his brow furrowed. Slowly, as if coaxing a stubborn creature from its hiding place, the fire begins to grow. The ember expands into a swirling ball of flame, twisting and spiraling like a living thing. Its warm glow flickers in his eyes, casting eerie shadows across the stones around him.
His breathing slows, steadying, as he focuses more intently, willing the fire to obey. The air around him seems to shimmer with the heat radiating from the flames. Sweat trickles down his forehead, but he doesn't flinch, doesn't look away. His hands move, the fire following the subtle shift of his fingers, molding and expanding into a more controlled form—a spinning, crackling orb of light that hovers just above his hands.
The wind picks up, and the flames flicker wildly, but the young man's focus sharpens, and with a single, deliberate motion, he flings his hands apart. The fire explodes outward, a fiery arc that blazes across the clearing, leaving behind a trail of molten sparks. For a moment, the world is silent, save for the hiss of heat and the faint crackle of the fire.
He stands there, chest rising and falling with exertion, watching the remnants of the flame dissipate into the cool evening air. The houses there burn in flames leaving nothing in it's wake but ashes as the crafted fire cools down. A satisfied grin pulls at the corner of his mouth, and he breathes a sigh of relief. It's not perfect—not yet—but he's getting there. Slowly, the power inside him is starting to match the fire he's learning to control that will support his future deeds.
As he stares at the ashes, he felt a presence behind him as if watching him performing all this. As he turned to acknowledge the person witnessing all this, he saw him running. The ground beneath their feet is a blur of earth and stone as the chase unfolds through the dense, shadowed woods. The young man with fire magic—his face set in a grim, determined expression—pounds after his quarry, every muscle burning with the effort. His breathing is labored, but the heat in his chest is what drives him forward. The figure ahead of him—a swift, elusive shadow—is almost within reach, but not quite. The gap between them closes by inches, but it's never enough.
The trees around them stand tall and unyielding, their thick trunks and twisted branches making the chase more treacherous. The setting sun barely filters through the canopy, casting long, dark slivers of light that make the forest floor a treacherous maze of roots and rocks. But the young man doesn't stumble. His eyes lock onto the fleeting figure ahead, and all he can feel is the fire within, urging him to catch up, to stop this person.
His hands flex instinctively, and the air around him begins to shimmer with heat. The fire flickers to life, first as a faint glow that dances around his fingers, then more intensely as his anger and desperation fuel it. The flame grows stronger, coiling like a serpent around his arm, trailing a streak of molten light in the air behind him. He grits his teeth, forcing his will into the flames.
With a fierce shout, his hands flare outward, sending a burst of fire arcing toward the fleeing figure. The flames streak across the sky like a comet, missing the target by mere inches but lighting up the entire clearing in a fiery explosion. The heat from the blast feels like a wave, washing over him, but he barely notices it as his focus sharpens.
The person ahead stumbles slightly, the heat from the fire singeing the air around them, but they keep running. They're fast—faster than he expected—but he's closing in.
His heart hammers in his chest as he pushes harder, desperation clawing at him. His fingers crackle with magic, and this time, when he flings his hand forward, the fire explodes into a wall of flames that shoots up like a massive, fiery curtain, cutting off the path ahead. The person in front skids to a stop, eyes wide, the heat from the fire a searing wall between them and escape. They turn, looking for an opening, but the young man is already closing the gap, his boots thudding against the earth, the fire still burning hot in his chest.
"Stop!" he roars, his voice cracking with the force of his own power.
His quarry hesitates, just for a heartbeat, and that's all he needs. With a final burst of speed, he lunges forward, a blinding flash of flame erupting from his hand as he reaches out, desperate to catch the one who's been running for far too long. And then he ---
